Recipe of the Week: Apple Cake

Apple Cake
Fall and winter are a great time for apple cake, cappuccino coffee or hot chocolate after a long walk in the woods or along the beach. Try it all and enjoy. For added fiber, do not peel the apples. -- EclecticCooking.com

Ingredients:

125 g (4 oz) butter
1 1/2 dl (3/4 Cup) sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 dl (1 1/4 Cups) all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 Tbsp milk

Filling
3-4 medium-sized apples
1-2 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 175 C (350 F) Melt the butter and let it cool. Beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time and continue beating. Mix the baking powder with the flour and fold into the egg mixture together with the milk. Pour mixture into a round cake pan.

Peel apples and slice them thinly. Press them closely together into the dough and sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Bake in the lower wrack of the oven for 30-40 minutes at 175 C (350 F) or until cake is done. Serve warm.

Looking for MacGourmet Universal Binary Testers

A version of MacGourmet that runs on both "older" PowerPC Macs and the new Intel-based Macs is almost ready for testing. I'd like to have other people try it out before it's officially released though, to make there aren't any remaining issues.

To be a tester, please use the "Send Feedback" menu item in the Help menu of MacGourmet to send a message to support. I'm looking for people with the new Intel Macs, but people with PowerPC Macs would be useful too. It'd also be great if I could find some Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) users as well.

As with any test software, make sure that you backup your database before trying it out. I don't forsee any problems, but it's always better to be safe than to be sorry.

Thanks!

Recipe of the week: Apples-Almond Cake

I've kind of fallen behind in the Recipe of the Week posting, but fear not, it's for good reasons. Look for a new recipe pack soon, and a post about my pursuit of great thin crust pizza recipes.

Apples-Almond Cake
Apples are plentiful in the winter months and are, therefore, a good winter-time dessert which is both healthy and tasty. -- EclecticCooking.com

Ingredients:

4 apples e.g. belle de boskop
Ca. 30 g (1 oz) butter
4-6 Tbsp sugar
100 g (ca. 3 oz) blanched, slivered almonds
2 Tbsp flour
2 Tbsp milk
Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven at 225C (430F) Cut the apples in half, core them then cut them in fairly thin slices. Butter the bottom of a ceramic flan dish and spread the apples over the base of the flan.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter, add the sugar, flour and milk and cook gently until smooth, add the almonds and stir through. Top the apples with the batter. Bake in the oven at 225C (430 F) for about 20 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Server warm plain or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

MacGourmet 1.1.9 Now Available

MacGourmet 1.1.9, a maintenance release, is now available. This update prevents a rare case where an update can change more than one item. Because of this, 1.1.9 is recommended for all users.

This free update is available from the MacGourmet download page.

As always, you can find a full list of the changes here.

Just a quick future update: Development on version 2, the next major update continues. Though the current version of MacGourmet runs fine under Rosetta on the new Intel Macs, the next release of MacGourmet, 1.2, will be a universal binary. Stay tuned.
